Our 70-year history
Mr. Benito Lim, a young visionary back in 1948, started out a small store for electronics supplies and transistor radios. From five radios, he was able to expand it to more appliances from different brands, establishing him as a fair dealer in the process.
This success enabled Mr. Lim to set up a 200-square meter store at the Makati Commercial Centre in 1964. The said store pioneered the concept of “appliance supermarket-ing”, where one can purchase items from different brands under one roof.
This proved to be a successful concept that Automatic Appliances opened a bigger, 3,400-square-meter store at the heart of Makati’s business district. Aptly called as the Automatic Centre, it also housed a one-stop shop furniture store called BLIMS Fine Furniture.
Automatic Centre was also the first appliance retailer in the country to bring in some of the world’s most innovative technologies of their era such as colored televisions, stereo phono, VHS and Betamax players, and Walkman players.
Some of the milestones paved the way for more innovative concepts and stores that made the Automatic Centre that it is today:
1977: Opened first store outside Metro Manila in Araneta Center Cebu
1977: Opened 7000-square-meter Sogo Factory Outlet in Mandaluyong City
1980s: Introduced the first American type warehouse store in Araneta Center, Quezon
1998: First Appliance Retailer to be awarded as “Retailer of the Year” by the Philippine Retailer’s Association and the Department of Trade and Industry
1998: First Major Appliance Exhibit by a retailer at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati as part of the company’s 50th anniversary activities
2000s: Introduced new concept stores that cater to electronics and digital devices in
Glorietta 4, Trinoma 3, and Gateway Mall
2004: First Appliance retailer to introduce and display big-screen television systems at
an exhibit in Glorietta, Makati City
2007: Opened first Automatic SuperCentre in Araneta Center, Quezon City
The Automatic Centre today offers 20 stores nationwide, most of which are located across top shopping malls in the Greater Manila Area and Metro Cebu.
